Healthcare
Sicko
The basic premise of the movie is that the United States healthcare industry is fundamentally flawed. It begins by focusing on specific stories about the failings of the health industry. One fatal flaw is that they health insurance providers look at people statistically and from a view of dollars. This means that every decision that the health care industry takes is based on whether they will make money or not. This type of coverage was provided by conglomerates in the do of HMO’s that would be distributed to the masses through a private business setting. This type of coverage was first introduced by Richard Nixon in 1971 as a modern and improved scheme to obtain health care.
One debate that the health care industry raises towards the proponents of government healthcare is that government run healthcare will limit the amount of healthcare visits. This will eventually cause a socialist America. This strategy was successful in defeating Hillary Clinton’s push for government healthcare. Another strategy is by using money, to rob off the members of congress to push legislation that would attend the health care companies. This culminated in the signing of the new Medicare plan to pay the drug companies almost a trillion dollars to fund new prescriptions for the elderly.
An example of a solution to the problems caused by the problems of high cost is to go to another country for free health insurance. One country that is popular to go to is Canada. They have free healthcare. Numerous cases are given about the good job that Canadian healthcare has done for the country. One of these cases was when a man had a tendon snap in his arm that would have bankrupted him in the United States. When he went back to Canada they did it without any cost at all. The next country that is said to have cheap healthcare is England. Every single prescription is impartial around ten to twelve dollars. Another example of the cheap healthcare is that the right doctor’s visits do not cost any money. In fact, if you need money to help pay for your transportation to the hospital they will give you money. The British absorb that healthcare is a right and even one of the most conservative Prime ministers, Margaret Thatcher, said she would not change anything about the National Healthcare System.
Yet another country that enjoys a longer life is the French. There system even pays people there full salary when they are sick even for extended times of sick leave. France also has a system that deploys doctors to houses in order to treat for sudden symptoms. The evidence that is presented is backed up by statements given by Americans that compare the system to the American system. France also pays for five weeks of vacation and free higher education.
The practice of denying someone care in the United States has been controversial for years but now hospitals are taking people in cabs from a private hospital to one run by the government such as a county hospital. One group of Americans that have been unable to receive adequate health coverage are the volunteers that that worked at the 9/11 site. Many of these people worked for over two months in hazardous conditions. They then developed many breathing problems. In stark contrast to this lack of government help for the rescue workers, prisoners at Guantanamo Bay receive the only form of good government health care available to Americans. The film culminates in a trip to Cuba where the 9/11 workers were able to finally find treatment and several other subjects from the film were able to get
new and free information and treatment to help their condition.
The view that a Utilitarian would have on the scream would need to be in the form of several questions. The first would be a question of money. Which health care system would cost the median payer the most money? Whichever side was chose would then be used in order to satisfy the most people. The next question is which is more indispensable, “Good health care at a high cost or mediocre or poor health care at a low cost.” This question is perhaps the most important and part of the central debate on American values and is an argument extinct by both sides of the industry. Both money and healthcare are determining factors of the happiness of American citizens so it would be up to the majority of people to choose their most important need.
John Rawl’s justice would also be applied to the issue of healthcare. He would argue that if healthcare is a lawful then it must be given to everyone. The reason it is a proper is because it allow a vast advantage to those who have adequate coverage. This equates to a longer healthier life that is more productive than someone who does not share that same advantage. The key argument when applying Rawl’s ethics is the question of whether health care is a right. In England, France, and Canada it is definitely considered a accurate and it is therefore given to all. In America, it is not yet considered a right therefore there is not universal care that covers everyone without a large hassle. In fact the system actually makes money and profits from denials.
The debate about healthcare will not be solved quickly it will continue to be debated all over the world. At the current time it seems that many countries in the world are moving towards a nationalized system of health care. This trend has been going on for the last sixty years and recently the United States’ passed their bear legislation that broadened the coverage of millions of Americans. Many believe that this is the first step to making America a truly universal health care system that will work efficiently and provide more comprehensive and cheaper coverage to them. People that argue against this point out that government programs have always cost more than is originally projected and is often very inefficient. This would cause backups in the healthcare system leading to slow response times and low availability for treating patients. Whether America is going to change its system more radically is ultimately up to the American people. They are the ones that vote the members of Congress into their respective seat. These folks will be a good reflection of the opinion of the American people over the long term. As with most successful programs health care must be thoroughly thought out and planned before it implementation and the possible repercussions it could generate.
