Nursing Careers

When I went to LPN school it was because I truly wanted to help people. I have worked in nursing homes and hospitals and family practice clinics. I can say that I would not trade my job for anything.

I remember in the nursing home bonding with many patients. One lady, I bought her a small christmas tree at the holidays and decorated her room while she was at supper. She had told me the sage of her son not coming to see her or spoken to her for 13 years due to her spouse and his disapproval.

One of my favorite times in the nursing home was meal time when I could sit down and help feed the patients and just try talking with them . Some of the other nurses would say you can’t rep involved, boy are they not with it and should not be in this profession. I cried when some of my patients passed away.

Then I moved on to the hospital which of course your patients came and went rather quickly. Many times I would go to the rooms and chat with the pts. I took care of a gentlemen which had to have one on one care because do to surgery and the medications that were mature he was confused and combative. I was assigned to sit in the room with him. When he started to approach around and the meds wore off He told me that he remembered what he had done and that everytime the helicoptor took off or landed outside his room that he was back in the war and the restraints we had on him felt like he was being held captive again. WOW if only we would have known he could have been moved to the other hall.

A young lady I took care of was in a very abominable accident and was left a quad. She told me that while she was in the ER the things that were said by the nurses and doctors about her while she was unconcious, and they did not reflect she could hear. That certainly was a learning experience for me. I built a very good bond with her and she was on our floor for several days. The day before she was to be moved to a spine center she passed away. I was devastated . I was not sure I could continue this work but I did and learned from more patients.

Now I work in a large family practice clinic and love my job. I see all ages and love my patients again a lot of bonding. I have helped patients get medications free that cannot afford to lift their meds. I am adamant about making sure they have what they need. I have worked with nurses that I feel are only in it for the pay and can hardly wait too run out the door .

My advice to the new nurses coming on . Give it your all HEART AND SOUL. LOVE THIS JOB NO MATTER WHAT.
