Is A Nursing Degree Right For You

We hear about the expansive shortage of nurses in the United States, but nursing is a tough field and is not meant for everybody. It can be a rewarding career for the upright individuals, but a lot of people thinking of getting a nursing degree don’t fully know what nursing entails. It is much more than having a good bedside manner and the ability to administer flu shots. Before you begin your journey into nursing get to know yourself a bit and what you are truly splendid of as well as get to know the details of what a nurse does. Then ask yourself, “is a nursing degree the right thing for me? “

Can you deal with blood and needles?

This is a daily thing for nurses. Whether you work in a doctors office or an emergency room you will need to be able to confidently use needles and deal with the sight of blood. One day you may need to place an IV into someones arm and the next day you may need to aid in saving the life of a gun shot victim. When I was doing my clinicals we practiced giving shots are drawing blood on our classmates. We were strongly supervised, but within the first day of clinicals we dove right into the blood and needles so be prepared.

Are you prepared for extensive coursework?

Nurses need to know a lot about the human body. The human body is complicated and the details will be crammed into your brain. Nurses often need to know almost as much as doctors, but get far less years to learn and master it. During this time you will also be learning pharmacology principles, medical ethics and clinical skills. It is a immense amount of work and takes utmost discipline and responsibility.

Will you be able to handle stressful and traumatic situations?

As a nurse you will see patients who are suffering and dying. Certain there are patients who will be fine, but there are plenty of cases in which the opposite is right. Being a nurse requires that you be strong emotionally and that you can remain calm in the most traumatic of situations. This is especially legal if you want to go into an emergency or distinguished care setting. You will gaze patients on the brink of death and if you cannot deal with these kinds of situations you may want to rethink getting a nursing degree.

Are you a responsible and caring person?

As a nurse it is your job to recall care of other people. You are responsible and accountable for all of your actions and each and every patient. You need to be nonjudgmental and unbiased so that you can provide the same quality of care to each and every patient you encounter.

Can you work a crazy schedule often filled with overtime?

Nursing is an unpredictable field and there is often no space hours for nurses. Just because your scheduled to work till 7:00pm does not mean you will get off at 7:00pm. Things happen and people get sick every second of every day and you as a nurse need to help get them better. You are also not guaranteed days off because when trauma strikes you may very well be needed and have no choice but to come to work.
