If you are a first time college student or someone in the work force looking for a career change, Keiser University might be for you. Keiser University’s main campus is in Ft. Lauderdale, with locations throughout Florida including Daytona Beach, Ft. Meyers, Jacksonville, Orlando, Port St. Lucie, Sarasota, Tallahassee, Tampa, West Palm Beach, Kendall, Lakeland, Melbourne, and Pembroke Pines. There is also an off-campus site in Shanghai, China, and anyone in the world can be a Keiser University Online student.

The main campus in Ft. Lauderdale is located at 1500 Northwest 49th Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33309. Their phone number is 1-800-749-4456, and you can visit their website at www.keiseruniversity.edu for more information about their programs.

Keiser University has many programs, from Associate degrees to Bachelors to even Graduate studies. Celebrated programs at Keiser are Culinary Arts, Business Administration, Accounting, Radiology, Information Technology, and Elementary Education.

I am currently in the Information Technology program online, but have made the decision to switch to the BS in Elementary Education, on campus. It should not take me as long as a first time college student because I already have a BA in Theatre Arts, so I will not need to take general education classes. Keiser University has a few different options for schooling. There are some programs that you can do entirely online, but others that you need to take on-campus, or you can do a mixture of both online and on-campus. For instance, the has class from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm Monday through Friday, while as an Elementary Education major I will have class three days a week from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. You take one class per month, at an accelerated pace, which is four classes per semester. If you are working and you need to take night classes, that is also an option. Night classes are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. These various times are great because this is a career college, so they understand that most of their students are working school around their jobs.

Keiser University’s tuition is, from my experience, approximately $9,000 per semester, and Keiser has a very knowledgeable financial aid staff that will help you get grants and loans to fully fund your college education. On top of your tuition you also have to pay $50 a month out of pocket as a fee to the school. I honestly couldn’t explain you why. That’s my only irritation with the school.

Overall my experience with Keiser University has been a obvious one. While I have had to make clear to stay on top of my advisors making sure that all my classes are fair, they have all been very helpful. When you walk into the lobby of Keiser you are always greeted with a smile and a very tickled receptionist team who will do anything for you.

Again, visit www.keiseruniversity.edu to peep what they are all about, or go to www.keiseruniversity.org to visit the online campus.

In 2001, my facility began an initiative that changed the entry level to their career ladder to RNs with Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN). This increased the opportunity for career advancement and improved the quality of the professional nursing staff. Nurses, like me, with years of experience were “grandfathered” in and placed at the base of the BSN level. Although I was not required to return to college, the initiative offered paid tuition in exchange for 1 ½ years of service and I had no plans to leave.

Initially, I was nervous about returning to school; I was in my 40s and had not been in college for over 20 years but I like a good challenge. I researched the internet for a RN to BSN program that was completely online and did not require visitation to the college campus. I decided on the University of Phoenix (Arizona) program; I enrolled in 2002.

University of Phoenix Online RN-BSN Program: Getting Started

The tuition was very expensive (over $1000 each nursing course in the program) but my facility paid the entire amount. The books were also costly; in some courses, the instructors used their own syllabus more than the book.

Most of my previous college credits were accepted; I had to take four prerequisites. College algebra was among those required; it has been completely useless in my nursing career. I was able to take three prerequisites at the same time but the RN-BSN courses were only offered one each semester, lasting six to eight weeks.

The Instructors and Student Groups

The University of Phoenix instructors, for the most part, were very professional and knowledgeable. They were prompt in responding to inquiries, providing several methods to contact them, even private numbers.

Nursing students were divided into groups and required to work together on several assignments in addition to individual assignments. Personality problems were inevitable; some students were rude, critical, and uncooperative. There were those who refused to work together in completing assignments in a timely manner, lacked the ability to accept constructive criticism, or to “take up the slack” when a group member had an emergency.

Personal problems, illnesses, accidents, and deaths in the family occurred. Most of my groups worked together very well though. The instructors understood group dynamics and that problems do happen; we were allowed to inform them of group situations but changing groups was infrequent. Groups included members with varying degrees of nursing experience, cultural diversification, and age ranges.

Accelerated Studies and Course Assignments

University of Phoenix RN-BSN online is an accelerated program. Assignments require reading several book chapters a week and writing multiple papers. It is not the program for those who dislike writing papers because most assignments include writing at least three a week (most over 2500 words in length) and/or PowerPoint presentations. You must possess excellent grammar, spelling, and computer skills, in addition to learning how to cite sources using the APA method. Most of this was new to me as a 1981 nursing graduate.

The key to receiving good grades is to follow assignment instructions to the letter, as outlined in the syllabus. Not performing spell and grammar checks will result in lower grades. Plagiarism is taken seriously; it may lead to expulsion from the program.

Each student was required to log in, read, and respond to group discussions and questions posted by the instructors. I would log in to the class daily and post at least 4-6 comments; this can be done any time, day, or night. I was “in school” during a hurricane in September 2004, I signed out 15 minutes before a large pecan tree fell through my home.

Although the RN-BSN program did not require visiting a college campus, I had to “adopt” a family to teach health issues (I broken-down my cousin’s family), visit a woman’s shelter, and go to a homeless shelter to explain a course on heat strokes (I had to develop an educational brochure). This was toward the kill of the program with a focus on community resources and patient/family education.

Completion

The University of Phoenix RN-BSN online program maintained as high a standard as a ground college program. It was difficult because of the accelerated studies but they strived to keep it professional; it was education at its best. I was able to continue working full time due to the convenience of the online program. I graduated in November 2004 with a 3.8 (hard earned) GPA.

Online are not all that different than the standard type of school with a few exceptions. There are several ways in which you can study nursing online and each of the schools that offer online course studies do things a little different. There is no one right or wrong answer when it comes to how an online class works. This is what makes the online schools so great as they can offer so much more in a shorter amount of time than the traditional schools can. The online schools are built around the needs of the students especially those who have certain time constraints like holding down a full time job on top of going to school. This makes them so popular that more and more schools each year are turning to online course studies to make sure that they are offering their students only the best in high level education for the next years to come.

For the most part, a student that is involved in an online will spend a certain number of hours in class room study just like a traditional school. Some of the schools offer classes through teleconferencing and other methods to make it as trouble free as possible. This allows the students to be in a virtual class room as the teacher lectures on different subjects. The students then have the option to pose questions over the internet connection to the classroom via the computer. The teacher than answers the questions either out loud or through an email selection that is set up for each student and teacher.

Some schools are geared more towards the independent studies of the students believing that this will earn them more knowledge if they do it themselves. These schools do offer communication with the professors over a secure internet connection to help with any issues that the student may have. These schools believe that this is the best and most effective way to handle the learning process and to help keep the costs down. With this system, most of the students receive their assignments via email and are required to return them via the same method in a certain amount of time.

Most of the courses also require books much like the traditional schools do. It is not prudent to try and offer every bit of material over the internet. This can cause a lot of problems among the students and teachers who often times prefer to garner the knowledge with traditional text books as well as online materials.

Taking a page from the traditional courses, teachers also require that all homework assignments be turned in by the specified time. This will help to ensure that the student did the work and not just forgot about it in the midst of all the other life situations that the student may be having.

Of course, before your degree is complete you will need to transfer to a land campus to take part in clinicals. This part of the degree takes place in person and is a requirement to earn a degree in nursing.

Check with the school that you desire to attend to determine how they handle online study in the classroom environment
